Library Fireplace Insert, the James House, Carmel Highlands, California: Morrison & Breytenbach Architects designed the wrought iron panel insert to improve the draw of the Library fireplace by Charles Greene.
The early 20th Century James House by Charles Greene, at Carmel Highlands, California, USA, was built of locally quarried stone in the arts and crafts Spanish Mission Revival style. In the mid 1990s it required maintenance and conservation work. We were fortunate to be commissioned to design a series of lanterns for the historic home, to improve external lighting, and fireplace inserts to improve their functional draw as hung artworks were becoming damaged by smoke. Our approach was to design elements aesthetically sensitive to the era and to have them hand made by fine artisans.
