The adaptive re-use of 93a Hill Street, West Hobart, transformed a modest 20th Century red brick church into an inspiring private residence – a place of intimacy and personal identity that is spacious and light, expansive and uplifting. Previous additions to the original church left only a small open yard in the cold south-eastern corner of the site. We demolished the rear room turning it and the yard “inside-out” to create a central, sunny, external courtyard with bedroom wings on either side. From the street entrance a sequence of transition spaces progress from the public domain through increasingly private living areas, culminating in the courtyard, which brings natural light, warmth and a sense of spaciousness into the home.
