Balamara Street Housing in Bellerive is 13 two bedroomed houses designed for universal access commissioned by Housing Tasmania. The development form reflects the scale of the existing urban fabric and the site design features an uncomplicated and economical layout. The sloping land is terraced on three levels that follow the contours of the site. A communal courtyard on the middle level is devoted to vehicular access, parking and pedestrian movement. The houses are placed in the upper and lower levels with ramped access to all. Orientation maximises solar gain for every dwelling and takes advantage of the views to Hobart and kunanyi / Mount Wellington. Each house has a private courtyard adjacent to the living areas. The buildings achieved a 7.5 ‘AccuRate’ energy rating and solar hot water systems are fitted to each house.
